Million Hectare Walk by Haribon: Sunday November 22, 6am

Million Hectare Walk by Haribon: Sunday November 22, 6am
Thank you to Leo from Filipino Pilgrim (filipinopilgrim.multiply.com) for passing on the information about this annual walk held by Haribon Foundation to raise funds and awareness for their goal to rehabilitate 1 million hectares of forest by 2020.

Barefootprint would like to put in a team - even better if it's a team of NatureKeeping and NatureLoving children. They have two circuits around Ninoy Aquino Park, Quezon City - one is 1.5km another is just 300m - so if kids would like to join, we can do the smaller one to earn greater sponsorship.

The mechanism is that you gain sponsorship per lap you walk - so the more laps, the bigger donation you give to Haribon to fulfill their goal to replant a million hectares by 2020.

If you'd like to participate with us (adults and kids alike), please contact us:

Leland - leland@barefootprint-outdoors.com/ 0915 850 1244.

Otherwise, sign up on your own at Haribon Foundation: www.haribon.org.ph and download the forms.

The fee is P250 for members (also see their website for membership details), otherwise P300 for adults and P250 for children below 13.

The fee includes a tshirt and goodie bag.

The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC)

The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC)
The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) is now continuously receiving cash and in-kind donations from good-hearted Filipinos and socially-responsible corporations and organizations to help families affected by tropical storm “Ondoy”, the PNRC Operation Center reported.

Today, PNRC received 1,500 loaves of bread from Gardenia Bakeries Incorporated while 1000 packs of cooked pancit were donated by Barbaras catering. These food items will be distributed immediately to the evacuation centers in Metro Manila.

Others also donated sardines, noodles, biscuits, bottles of mineral water and powdered milk. A large number of used clothes were also donated.

There were also corporations, organizations and individuals who gave monetary donations through bank deposits and walk-in cash donors.

Likewise, the PNRC availed 1,000 sacks of rice to the National Food Authority (NFA) to be distributed to affected families in evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, PNRC Chairman Senator Richard Gordon expressed his thanks to good-hearted Filipinos who gave cash and in-kind donations to help other people in distress.

“I am very elated that there are good–hearted Filipinos who are with the Red Cross during this crisis. We are hoping that more individuals will walk in the doorsteps of PNRC to lend their helping hands,” said Gordon.

The PNRC continuously accepts donations through the following ways:

http://mothernatureasia.multiply.com/photos/album/39/Bicolandia_Whale_Shark_Encounter

For decades, the seafaring native of Donsol, Sorsogon have been living in the company of the Butandings – huge, gentle whale sharks that live in great numbers offshore. In a still-unexplained natural phenomenon, droves of these rare animals appear in the waters off this town during the summer months in Sorsogon.

Get the chance to swim with the gentle giant whale sharks found in Donsol, Sorsogon. FYI: they are vegetarian, promise. Then, row your way and enjoy the magnificent view of nipas and trees in Bicol river, understanding the fresh water ecosystem, that attracts the shark whales. And experience the magical sights of thousands of fireflies dancing, flickering and romancing making the trees glow in the dark. And get to wonder at the majestic Mayon Volcano in Albay.

Itinerary:
Day 0 Dec 26 Sat 8 pm Bus Terminal
Day 1 Dec 27 Sun 4 am ETA Legaspi City, proceed to Donsol, Sorsogon for the whale
shark interaction. Enjoy the rare experience of swimming along with the whale sharks as they feed. Some are bigger than your boat! During the peak season, you wouldn’t know where to look because several whale sharks may appear at the same time.

3 pm Mangrove Tree Planting, Firefly watch in Donsol River. The river (source of the plankton that serves as food for the whale sharks) abounds with mangroves inhabited by fireflies. Along the way to the firefly sanctuary, you will see fishermen at work.
Sea Food Dinner Buffet beside the river.

Day 2 Dec 28 Mon Whole day tour of Albay : Cagsawa Ruins, Phivolcs Observatory,

THE BASECAMP

Several main and simple activities might thrill and exhaust you down during the 24th Midyear Fedclimb and President’s Meeting, but nothing compares to a relaxing basecamp. We know that before arriving in Tarlac, you’re probably thinking what the basecamp looks like. You’re mind flooding you with questions like “Is it hot at the basecamp?”, Can I hang my hammock there and just have a relaxing siesta?”, “Are there any stores where I can buy food and some basic necessities?”, “How much alcohol can I take this time?”

Okay, okay… yes, we are mountaineers and this type of wishful thinking is only common, however considered bonus if you are in a federation climb.

The basecamp is actually inside the expansive Tarlac Eco-Park in the municipality of San Jose. It doesn’t have a hotel or room accommodations but the place is very much perfect for camping. The basecamp has lots of trees where you can tie that hammock. There are pocket gazebos, table and benches.

The basecamp has water and bathroom facilities, and nipa stores selling drinks, snacks, rice, viands and some very basic provisions. Make sure to charge your cellphone and bring spare battery, though there is electricity in the basecamp, the facilities for charging cellphones are very limited.

HOW TO GO TO THE BASECAMP

From Five Star Bus Cubao EDSA terminal or Five Star Bus Pasay terminal (near Winston Lodge Pasay EDSA), take Tarlac/Dagupan/Bolinao bound buses.

Get off at Capas, Tarlac junction. Transportation from junction to basecamp will be provided    (pls see schedule of free transport). Bus ride to Capas junction will take 2 hours depending on traffic condition. Capas Junction has fastfood chains such as Chowking and McDo, and various grocery stores; you can have your last minute shopping there.

PARTICIPANTS FROM NAIA:

The most convenient and fastest way is by taking the shuttle that picks up commuters from NAIA Terminal 3. Usually, commuters will just wait at the bus stop located right at the very southernmost part of the arrival area platform. There’s a big sign saying “NAIA Three Loop Bus Stop” at one of the gigantic posts. Its only P20.00 for one way per person and it will get you all the way to EDSA on an air-conditioned coaster shuttle.

From EDSA Pasay rotunda, you can walk northbound then turn right to Winston Lodge. Thereon, you will see Five Star bus terminal. Or take any bus with Fairview/Lagro signage which will take you to Cubao at less than P25.00 for ordinary fare. Get off at Cubao EDSA Five Star bus terminal.

Without the airport shuttle, you may take a jeepney (fare: P7.00) bound for Baclaran just outside the NAIA compound. From baclaran, ride a bus with Fairview/Lagro signage and get off at Winston Lodge Pasay (fare: P10.00 A/C bus) or at Cubao EDSA Five Star bus terminal (fare: P35.00 A/C bus).

If you have a bit to spare, take a regular cab outside the NAIA compound. The airport taxi (Yellow) is a bit expensive (flag down rate starts at P70 as compared to P30 of regular cabs). It will cost you a bit more than P100.00 for the taxi fare from outside the airport to Five Star bus terminal in Pasay and almost P200.00 to Cubao terminal.

And enjoy the magnificent view of Duglo falls.  You will be taught and guided by the expert, an Abeling.

MOUNTAIN BIKE CROSS-COUNTRY TRAILS

Trail A
Starting from the Eco-park admin building parking lot, this route proceeds uphill through the park’s gravel road.  The route then enters a single track on the left side which initially follows a descent then a moderate ascent.  The trail is overgrown and may require riders to dismount at some points to overcome obstacles.  The route ends at the dirt road near the admin building. The whole loop is only roughly 2 kilometers.  This route is recommended for novice riders, riding time is 10 to 20 minutes. Riders may use this route for warm ups and practicing riding technique.

 Trail B

The bike trail starts with a short downhill road section from the Eco-park admin building parking lot.  The route turns left into a hard packed dirt road.  The trail winds over roughly four kilometers of uphill and downhill sections, each gaining or losing about 50 meters of elevation.  The turnaround point is at a goat farm where riders can rest, drink refreshments and refill water bottles.  The return route goes through the same road in the opposite direction ending at the Eco-camp.  This route is recommended for beginner and intermediate trail riders and takes only 30 minutes to 1 hour.

 Trail C

The third trail is an extension of trail B that goes through a more challenging single track.  This short loop adds 3 kilometers to trail B but requires dismounting at one point to cross a stream. Expect narrow, muddy trails on this section of the ride.  Total distance including trail B is 13 kilometers back and forth.

 Trail D

Starting from base camp, the trail follows the cement road downhill then enters a dirt road to the left followed by more downhill then flat sections. The ride is two or three hours of biking on dirt and paved roads heading towards the San Pedro area.  The return leg is a steep and strenuous uphill back to the base camp.  If conditions permit, the lead biker may add some trail sections to this route.

WATER ACTIVITIES

Kayak Run

The kayak event is an 11 kilometer run through the Bulsa river of Tarlac.  This is composed of class one and class two white water (easy to moderate).  Participants will be riding in two person inflatable kayaks for two hours.  The kayak activity would require additional fee (to be published later). Slots for the kayak event will be limited on a first come first served basis.

Water Tubing

If swimming makes you boring, let’s have fun with tubes. At some part of the Bulsa River, ride the rapids for one hour using big tubes. This is composed of class one and class two white water (easy to moderate).  You may want to wear long sleeved shirt and soft pants to avoid scratches from tree branches and grasses while in the river.
