Yes to Smoke and Alcohol Free Mountains
"Yes to Smoke and Alcohol Free Mountains"
A RESPONSIBLE MOUNTAINEER is also an environmentalist; an environmentalist cares for the environment. A smoker is not an environmentalist. Cigarettes contain over 4000 chemicals which are exhaled and released into the air and the atmosphere. Hence, patronizing smoking only encourage producers to plant more tobacco than trees and crops that can feed starving children. Tobaccos are fragile plants that can easily be destroyed with plant disease thus often sprayed with harmful pesticides. Cigarette manufacturing uses 6.4km of paper an hour just for rolling and packaging cigarettes. Notice how many trees are put to waste? Also, second hand smoke is more dangerous to health. Approximately 10,000 mountaineers climb daily, 2000 of which smoke cigars; imagine the effect of that on our environment. Now smoker, do you still think you’re a mountaineer? THINK AGAIN!
Most mountaineers used to drink ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES to what they called SOCIALS. But come to think of this, too many bad effects in drinking such as difficulty in walking, blurred vision, slurred speech, slowed reaction times, impaired memory: Clearly, alcohol affects the brain. Some of these impairments are detectable after only one or two drinks. We can never determine what could happen next. Alcohol is a drug and that's the bottom line. It affects millions of people each day. Unfortunately, the person doing the drinking is not the only one who feels the impact of this abuse. It has a profound and direct impact on their friends and acquaintances. Until now, there are several reported accidents on mountains due to persons under the influence of alcohol. Now hardcore drinker, do you still think you’re a mountaineer? THINK AGAIN!
I don’t need your violent reactions if you are against this campaign. Just like the page if you believe such principles can be called responsible. I am a CANCER SURVIVOR; one of my reasons of climbing is to inhale fresh air. What is the difference between staying here in urban and climbing if I am still gasping smoke when I’m on top of the mountain. We almost lost lives when two of our group mates joined socials with other mountaineers because they got too drunk. We are not pushing you to do such, but I am whole heartedly asking your 1- 3 days only while on the mountain. Now is the time to erase bad images of mountaineers. Call us KIDS, OA, KJ.... call us anything you want....
But we call ourselves RESPONSIBLE MOUNTAINEERS!
NOW, ARE YOU IN!?
TRAILMASTERS OUTDOOR GROUP (TMOG)
“We are not just climbing; we are making difference, until we see change.”
