Synopsis:
At 4:00 a.m. today, the center of Tropical Storm "KATRING" was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 690 kms east of Extreme Northern Luzon (18.7°N 129.5°E) with maximum winds of 100 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 130 kph. It is forecast to move north northwest at 11 kph.
Forecast:
Eastern and Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. The rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. Moderate to strong winds blowing from the North to Northwest will prevail over Northern and Eastern Luzon and the coastals waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Light to moderate winds coming from the North to Northwest over the rest of Luzon and coming from the Southeast to Southwest over the rest of the country with slight to moderate seas.

Mayon Volcano ( lat.13'15.4 long.123'41.1 ) in the province of Albay, Bicol Peninsula,Southeastern Luzon Island, is the most active among 22 active volcanoes in the Philippines. The steep symmetrical strato cone has a summit elevation of 2,462 m ASL and a base diameter ca 20 kms. Mayon belongs to a northwest-trending chain of 13 P...liocene- Recent volcanic edifice comprising the Bicol Volcanic Arc form from Subduction along the Northern end of Philippine trench.PHILVOCS

Climb Overview :

Apparition Chapel to Camp Toril ( 673 m )
A gradual slope trail passing through private farm lands and lots of shades under Abaca plantations and shrubs, watch out poison ivy's are abound!
- A lot of space to choose from to pitch tents, rolling terrain.
Difficulty - Easy

Camp Toril to Ridge Camp #2 ( Elev. 1,315 m )

- The trail goes a ridge line with lush vegetation, there are open spots to admire the view of the islands and the ocean. The trail becomes steep on some parts but negotiable with ease.
-Difficulty - Moderate

Ridge Camp #2 to "George Steps" ( 2,200 m )

-- A long stretch of Lava Rocks formed int o a gully. Polished but not slippery even when wet.
-Flash floods may occur during heavy downpour.
- A rope system must be rigged at the steps due to possible loose rocks and scrambling on all fours while negotiating it. The walls are quite unstable but some parts can be bolted to accommodate hangers and set up the ropes, in order to ensure safe and easy ascent and descent from the crater.
Note: A rope system must be rigged to serve as hand line only at the steps and the upper walls towards the crater in order a proper flow of climbers is achieve specially a sudden thick cloud cover occurs when visual is affected during the climb. All climbers are advise to wear helmets of any kind when attempting the summit crater to avoid any head injury..

Mountain News: Mt. Pulag, Mt. Ugo may be temporarily inaccessible / Initial report of mountain road damages from Typhoon Juan

Reports are coming in from news media as well as our contacts from the North about the conditions of mountain roads, as well as mountains in the North. There are no immediate reports of damaged trails at the moment, but the exploratory trails of Ilocos and the Northern Sierra Madre may have gotten more difficult with the advent of Typhoon Juan.

Moreover, we were informed that Mt. Pulag may be inaccessible at the moment. There is no electricity and Kiset road is said to have been damaged. Accessibility to Mt. Ugo via Itogon is also unsure at the moment, with the N. Vizcaya-Benguet road confirmed to be damaged. There have been no reports of damage in roads leading to Mts. Napulauan or Amuyao. Visitors to Sagada are advised to check with their hotels/inns to see if Halsema Highway is intact.

Roads are usually repaired within days, and within a week or so we expect access to Mt. Pulag and other mountains to be restored. Again it is best to check with local authorities such as park officials (Mt. Pulag) or hotels (Sagada). This is highly recommended for those who have scheduled hikes this weekend. Mt. Ugu, Nueva Vizcaya traverse Benguet

Date: October 30-31, 2009 / Optional Baguio city side trip

Mt. Ugu is one of the major peaks in the mountainous Benguet and Nueva Vizcaya provinces. The site was discovered as a new hiking destination last 1987 when a PAL plane crashed on one of its slopes. Mountaineers who volunteered on the ensuing rescue operations were awed by the adventure experience of exploring this mountain making it a part of their succeeding explorations. Then for a long time, it was a place known only to a handful until the time when the other mountaineering groups started to re-discover the place.

Mt. Ugu is another proof that the Cordilleras is one of the richest hiking destinations in the country. It is a cross-country hike traversing several territories cutting across the provinces of Benguet and Nueva Vizcaya. It is a part of the “Cordillera Way” which is a series of trails crisscrossing the Cordillera Mountains. In fact you can create other exploration trips within this destination like a Napulauan-Ugu or Mt. Ugu-Pulag hikes. The Mt. Ugu hike itself is already visually rewarding physically challenging enough for you to reconsider the other routes. Nestled between the vast mountain lies the 2,150 high summit of Mt. Ugu. From the summit, you can catch a panoramic view of Mt. Pulag on the North and the Nueva Vizcaya Mountains on the South. It’s not only the experience of the Cordillera wilderness that is rewarding but as well as the cultural experience of interacting and passing by the remote villages of Itogon and Kayapa. Definitely Mt. Ugu is a better alternative to Mt. Pulag especially if you want to get away from the “beaten tracks”

BACKGROUND
Centuries ago, the Spaniards aboard their galleons to Manila Bay noticed the form of a giant parrot, perched in the forested mountains in Cavite. They named it "Pico de Loro" - "Parrot's Peak" Today, mountaineers who visit Pico de Loro discover that it is as enchanting as its name. High on Cavite's highest point, they could behold the rocky tower that the Spanish sailors once saw as the parrot's beak, and they could gaze towards South China Sea where the galleons once sailed, all the way to the historic island fort of Corregidor. Gusts of sea breeze reach the peak, refreshing hikers after a four-hour climb. The peak's rocky outcropping is dramatic, and sharply contrasts with the plains of Cavite and the waters of South China Sea

Emilio Aguinaldo, in May 1897 originally recommended that Andres Bonifacio be banished to Pico de Loro. He was overruled by his generals, who instead recommended Bonifacio to be executed in Mt. Tala. This goes to prove that the name Pico de Loro was around before Spanish times, and places a historical significance to the mountain.

During World War 11, the Japanese established a garrison in Kiangan. When the U.S. Liberation Forces landed in Luzon in January 1945, the Japanese Imperial Army under General Yamashita retreated to Ifugao. They established a stronghold on the slopes of Mt. Napaluan in Hungduan, but the joint Filipino- American Forces went after them with continuous bombing and artillery fire. On September 3, 1945, Yamashita finally surrendered in Kiangan, bringing the war in the Pacific to an end.

Mt. Cinco Picos in Subic, Zambales is a hiking destination that is attracting the interest of more and more climbers. Once a training ground for US servicemen stationed in the now-defunct Subic Naval Base, this mountain, like the nearby highlands, is home to the local Aetas who call the mountain "Tatlong Tirad". The Spanish name 'Cinco Picos' represents the five peaks of the mountain. The typical two-day trek in Mt. Cinco Picos starts at an Aeta settlement called Sitio Cawag and will take you past Peaks 1 and 2. At Peak 3 lets you glimpse at Peaks 4 and 5. Aside from the rolling, grassy slopes that characterize the coastal side of the Zambales mountains, views of Subic Bay, neighboring Mt. Balingkilat, and nearby islands and beaches make climbing Cinco Picos a truly pleasant experience.

Reminders and things to Consider:
1. Permit or Letter of Intent to be given to the following authorities: Municipal Mayor, Police Station and Chieftain.
2. Provide food and shelter for the Guides.
3. Guides / Porters are available @ Php 300 / porter per day (overnight would be Php 600)

4. Ratio of climber to guide would be 1:5

5. Open trails throughout climb - bring sunblock/sun protection and wear arm sleeves and leggings,to avoid having numerous cuts from tall cogon grass and seriously thorny vines.

6. A lot of loose rocks along the trail until the grasslands , so caution should be observed.

7. Water source is present at the campsite and along the trail.
8. Minor portions of steep assaults (after the 4th river & grasslands) though relatively easy trail, prior.

9. Campsite may accommodate more than 5 tents, although there are other campsites in close proximity to water source.

10. Views of Mt. Dayungan, Mt. Balingkilat and Silanguin cove at campsite and Subic Naval yard at grasslands.
11. Use a trekking pole
12. Wear shoes that will easily dry. Your shoes will get wet from the river trek.

13. Souvenirs made by Aetas are available at Cawag settlement (novelty crossbows, mugs, etc.)

NOTE: Itinerary is subject for minor changes due to travel conditions and other logistics but will not affect the entire activity. Everybody is advised to work as a team to be more efficient.

ACTIVITY RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. The organizing committee reserves the right to cancel the participation of a person or a group at their discretion if they feel that it would be detrimental to fellow.

2. The following are not allowed during the 2 day activity: - firearms, explosives, military uniform and/or Paraphernalia’s and hazardous/prohibited drugs.

3. Participants are expected to participate in all the activities, lectures, trainings, and tasks set by the organizing committee, this is not your ordinary outing, though we intend it a fun filled activity, we wouldn’t want to sacrifice the objectives of this project.

4. Nobody can leave the campsite premises or make an ascent and/or descent without permission to the Camp master. Buddy system is strongly encouraged.

5. Nobody is allowed to go on swimming without asking permission to the Camp master.

6. We will be incorporating a “Backpacking” style of camping in our trip, since our campsite is in abundance of water, you may cook any food you want. We also suggest that you bring your camp chair for added comfort during the lecture time, might as well bring anything you could carry on your backpack that would make camp life easier and more comfortable for you, because you don’t have to worry about the weight, there won’t be any long trek this time. We will be focusing our trip to BMC and Rappelling only and of course we will have fun as we learn and get to know each other.

General Information

Mt. Malindang Natural Park lies within the Malindang mountain range in Mindanao, straddling the provinces of Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur. It covers over 34,000 hectares. Its highest peak is at 2,402 meters above sea level. The Park’s allure comes from its waterfalls, crater lake and dense virgin forests which host diverse and rare species of flora and fauna. A variety of trees - large, straight trunked evergreens, igem and almaciga grow in the lower parts of its forests while dwarf and crooked stem trees crowd the mossy forest found in the mountain’s upper parts. The rare and endangered Philippine Eagle, Flying Lemur, Deer, Tarsier, and Hornbills live in the Park. Other significant species found there include mammals such as the Philippine Deer, Wild Pig, Long-tailed Macaque, Palm Civet and Civet Cat. Moreover, the Park is known to be home of six amphibians, three reptiles, 67 birds and 25 mammals which are endemic

to the place. Sixteen major rivers trace their sources from the Park. Over one million people living in the three provinces depend on these waters for domestic and industrial purposes, as well as for farming of coconut, rice, root crops, vegetables, legumes, cacao and coffee. The indigenous people known as Subanen are believed to have occupied the mountain since time immemorial. Today, they live within and around the Park, practice slash-and-burn farming and have retained their distinct customs and traditions.
