OUTLAST THE LEGENDARY MAYON
OUTLAST THE LEGENDARY MAYON
December 28 at 4:00am - December 29 at 4:00pm
(an outreach program for the community of brgy mataas in cagraray island)
Mayon Volcano ( lat.13'15.4 long.123'41.1 ) in the province of Albay, Bicol Peninsula,Southeastern Luzon Island, is the most active among 22 active volcanoes in the Philippines. The steep symmetrical strato cone has a summit elevation of 2,462 m ASL and a base diameter ca 20 kms. Mayon belongs to a northwest-trending chain of 13 P...liocene- Recent volcanic edifice comprising the Bicol Volcanic Arc form from Subduction along the Northern end of Philippine trench.PHILVOCS
Climb Overview :
Apparition Chapel to Camp Toril ( 673 m )
A gradual slope trail passing through private farm lands and lots of shades under Abaca plantations and shrubs, watch out poison ivy's are abound!
- A lot of space to choose from to pitch tents, rolling terrain.
Difficulty - Easy
Camp Toril to Ridge Camp #2 ( Elev. 1,315 m )
- The trail goes a ridge line with lush vegetation, there are open spots to admire the view of the islands and the ocean. The trail becomes steep on some parts but negotiable with ease.
-Difficulty - Moderate
Ridge Camp #2 to "George Steps" ( 2,200 m )
-- A long stretch of Lava Rocks formed int o a gully. Polished but not slippery even when wet.
-Flash floods may occur during heavy downpour.
- A rope system must be rigged at the steps due to possible loose rocks and scrambling on all fours while negotiating it. The walls are quite unstable but some parts can be bolted to accommodate hangers and set up the ropes, in order to ensure safe and easy ascent and descent from the crater.
Note: A rope system must be rigged to serve as hand line only at the steps and the upper walls towards the crater in order a proper flow of climbers is achieve specially a sudden thick cloud cover occurs when visual is affected during the climb. All climbers are advise to wear helmets of any kind when attempting the summit crater to avoid any head injury..
- Difficulty - Calculated Risks
- Weather - ( December )
- Generally cloudy to occasional rain showers may occur during the day and evening. But who knows due to climate change, it might be sunny the whole time during the climb.
" What would be the weather be like tomorrow.? Ask the caller
The weather man answered: " look out the window and see for yourself." Only GOD makes the weather as it may deem necessary for all living creatures HE created.

Advisory
Moreover, we were informed that Mt. Pulag may be inaccessible at the moment. There is no electricity and Kiset road is said to have been damaged. Accessibility to Mt. Ugo via Itogon is also unsure at the moment, with the N. Vizcaya-Benguet road confirmed to be damaged. There have been no reports of damage in roads leading to Mts. Napulauan or Amuyao. Visitors to Sagada are advised to check with their hotels/inns to see if Halsema Highway is intact.
This following is a repost from a GMANews online article that may prove helpful to those travelling or backpacking up north in the very near future:
"As of Tuesday, the roads that are still impassable were:
Daang Maharlika from Tuguegarao City to Cauayan City, not passable
due to fallen trees and electric posts;
Apayao-Ilocos Norte Road, Marnas Bridge, Tanglagan Section;
Lenneng-Cabugao Road closed due to landslides;
Apayao-Ilocos Norte Road, saddle section closed due to swelling of
Maranas River;
Rabaw Section Km 72 closed due to fallen trees;
Mt. Province Boundary-Calanan Road Bannagao Section, due to soil and
rock slides;
Mt. Province Boundary-Calanan Road Dallimono Section;
Mt. Province-Ilocos Sur Road via Tue; Mt. Province-Cagayan via
Tabuk-Enrile Road, Makutiti in Ampawilen, Sadanga; and Mamaga,

Section, closed due to landslides;
Manila North Road in Sagayaden, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur;
Claveria-Calanasan Road, Mabanong Section;
Benguet Dalupirip Itogon and Nueva Vizcaya-Benguet Road;
Kennon Road"
Roads are usually repaired within days, and within a week or so we expect access to Mt. Pulag and other mountains to be restored. Again it is best to check with local authorities such as park officials (Mt. Pulag) or hotels (Sagada). This is highly recommended for those who have scheduled hikes this weekend. Pinoymountaineer.com will give updates on these developments as soon as we have them.

MT UGU TRAVERSE CROSS COUNTRY TREKKING
MT UGU TRAVERSE CROSS COUNTRY TREKKING
NUEVA VIZCAYA-BENGUET)
Mt. Ugu, Nueva Vizcaya traverse Benguet
Elevation: 2,150 masl, Level: Major Climb, Level III, Strenuous
Date: October 30-31, 2009 / Optional Baguio city side trip
Mt. Ugu is one of the major peaks in the mountainous Benguet and Nueva Vizcaya provinces. The site was discovered as a new hiking destination last 1987 when a PAL plane crashed on one of its slopes. Mountaineers who volunteered on the ensuing rescue operations were awed by the adventure experience of exploring this mountain making it a part of their succeeding explorations. Then for a long time, it was a place known only to a handful until the time when the other mountaineering groups started to re-discover the place.
Mt. Ugu is another proof that the Cordilleras is one of the richest hiking destinations in the country. It is a cross-country hike traversing several territories cutting across the provinces of Benguet and Nueva Vizcaya. It is a part of the “Cordillera Way” which is a series of trails crisscrossing the Cordillera Mountains. In fact you can create other exploration trips within this destination like a Napulauan-Ugu or Mt. Ugu-Pulag hikes. The Mt. Ugu hike itself is already visually rewarding physically challenging enough for you to reconsider the other routes. Nestled between the vast mountain lies the 2,150 high summit of Mt. Ugu. From the summit, you can catch a panoramic view of Mt. Pulag on the North and the Nueva Vizcaya Mountains on the South. It’s not only the experience of the Cordillera wilderness that is rewarding but as well as the cultural experience of interacting and passing by the remote villages of Itogon and Kayapa. Definitely Mt. Ugu is a better alternative to Mt. Pulag especially if you want to get away from the “beaten tracks”

Pulag especially if you want to get away from the “beaten tracks”

by Ogie San Jose
BACKGROUND
Centuries ago, the Spaniards aboard their galleons to Manila Bay noticed the form of a giant parrot, perched in the forested mountains in Cavite. They named it "Pico de Loro" - "Parrot's Peak" Today, mountaineers who visit Pico de Loro discover that it is as enchanting as its name. High on Cavite's highest point, they could behold the rocky tower that the Spanish sailors once saw as the parrot's beak, and they could gaze towards South China Sea where the galleons once sailed, all the way to the historic island fort of Corregidor. Gusts of sea breeze reach the peak, refreshing hikers after a four-hour climb. The peak's rocky outcropping is dramatic, and sharply contrasts with the plains of Cavite and the waters of South China Sea
TRIVIA
SM Investments Corporation is developing "Pico de Loro Cove", a residential and luxury resort complex in Nasugbu, Batangas at the foothills of Mt. Palay-Palay.
Emilio Aguinaldo, in May 1897 originally recommended that Andres Bonifacio be banished to Pico de Loro. He was overruled by his generals, who instead recommended Bonifacio to be executed in Mt. Tala. This goes to prove that the name Pico de Loro was around before Spanish times, and places a historical significance to the mountain.

During World War 11, the Japanese established a garrison in Kiangan. When the U.S. Liberation Forces landed in Luzon in January 1945, the Japanese Imperial Army under General Yamashita retreated to Ifugao. They established a stronghold on the slopes of Mt. Napaluan in Hungduan, but the joint Filipino- American Forces went after them with continuous bombing and artillery fire. On September 3, 1945, Yamashita finally surrendered in Kiangan, bringing the war in the Pacific to an end.

Mt. Cinco Picos in Subic, Zambales is a hiking destination that is attracting the interest of more and more climbers. Once a training ground for US servicemen stationed in the now-defunct Subic Naval Base, this mountain, like the nearby highlands, is home to the local Aetas who call the mountain "Tatlong Tirad". The Spanish name 'Cinco Picos' represents the five peaks of the mountain. The typical two-day trek in Mt. Cinco Picos starts at an Aeta settlement called Sitio Cawag and will take you past Peaks 1 and 2. At Peak 3 lets you glimpse at Peaks 4 and 5. Aside from the rolling, grassy slopes that characterize the coastal side of the Zambales mountains, views of Subic Bay, neighboring Mt. Balingkilat, and nearby islands and beaches make climbing Cinco Picos a truly pleasant experience.

DAY1: Oct 23
General Information
Mt. Malindang Natural Park lies within the Malindang mountain range in Mindanao, straddling the provinces of Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur. It covers over 34,000 hectares. Its highest peak is at 2,402 meters above sea level. The Parks allure comes from its waterfalls, crater lake and dense virgin forests which host diverse and rare species of flora and fauna. A variety of trees - large, straight trunked evergreens, igem and almaciga grow in the lower parts of its forests while dwarf and crooked stem trees crowd the mossy forest found in the mountains upper parts. The rare and endangered Philippine Eagle, Flying Lemur, Deer, Tarsier, and Hornbills live in the Park. Other significant species found there include mammals such as the Philippine Deer, Wild Pig, Long-tailed Macaque, Palm Civet and Civet Cat. Moreover, the Park is known to be home of six amphibians, three reptiles, 67 birds and 25 mammals which are endemic
to the place. Sixteen major rivers trace their sources from the Park. Over one million people living in the three provinces depend on these waters for domestic and industrial purposes, as well as for farming of coconut, rice, root crops, vegetables, legumes, cacao and coffee. The indigenous people known as Subanen are believed to have occupied the mountain since time immemorial. Today, they live within and around the Park, practice slash-and-burn farming and have retained their distinct customs and traditions.

Mt. Banahaw
Mountain News: Three hiking guides shot dead in Mt. Banahaw, Dolores, Quezon
According to a report from Abante Tonite and as corroborated with our contacts in Dolores, Quezon, three persons, namely Robert Villapando, Hadjie Rebandao, and Joey Rebandao were shot dead while resting on a tent in Sitio Banca, Mt. Banahaw, in Dolores, Quezon. There are no statements yet from the police as to whether this act was perpetuated by elements of the New People's Army (NPA).Some mountaineers have told informed us, through email and through the PinoyMountaineer Facebook page, that they have met these persons, or have contracted their guiding services in Mt. Cristobal and Mt. Banahaw in the past.
Concerns regarding the safety of mountaineers in Mt. Banahaw have been expressed. The mountain is still officially closed to the public though permits have been issued since last year, and 'backdoor' entries are in vogue. We are still awaiting the reaction of Ms. Sally Pangan, PASU of Mt. Banahaw- San Cristobal National Park, regarding this incident.
Even before conclusions as to the nature of the crime can be drawn, we strongly condemn this act. No person, no matter how bad, deserves to be murdered, and the rule of law must prevail and be enforced even on the mountains.

Apexus Tadpole Review
Apexus Tadpole Review

Apexus Tadpole Review, part 1
There are quite a few benefits of purchasing an item directly from its manufacturer compared to availing it in established outlets. Economically, a few hundreds can be saved; and there is the rare intangible of interacting with the manufacturer face-to-face, which adds to your confidence over the product growing every second spend dealing with him.
Such was my experience with Mr. Terry Villas, an exponent of mountaineering activities and the architect of Apexus Outdoor Equipment, when I purchased the Apexus Tadpole – obviously what this review is all about. I have a Coleman Peak1 Sundome tent that sleeps two people but is definitely not suited for my Mt. Apo endeavor as I need a lighter and more aerodynamic home away from home.
Purchase History
Fully aware that the Apexus Tadpole is proudly Philippine-made, I was initially set on bagging one; for at last aside from Sandugo, I have another locally made product that I can be proud of. However, the color that caught my attention – the Pink+Black combo – was not available during my first inquiry; and seemed like it's next to impossible to produce one before my date with Mt. Apo (at least that's how Sir Terry made it sound like).
With the power of the internet at my disposal, I scouted for an alternative. Coleman Exponent Avior X1? Not available locally as of the moment. Conquer Tadpole? Good but too big for my preference. Mountain Hardware Viperine 2? Too pricey for me. How about The North Face Tadpole 23, the one that started it all? Luckily found a second-hand item with minor damage on the flysheet pegged at almost the same price as the Apexus'. Nonetheless, some inquiries concerning the item were never satisfied (for goodness sake, it was damaged so I have to make sure before I make a move, right?) so I scratched it off my list.
As the days inched closer, I've finally decided to go back to my first option – the Apexus Tadpole – only that I have to settle with the All Black offering. I popped a message to Sir Terry's Multiply site (http://apexus.multiply.com) just to inform him that I'll be purchasing an Apexus Tadpole. And jokingly remarked that I hope a Pink+Black combo will be available.
Guess what? Well, tt's still not available. But a Black+Pink combo was! No matter, as long as the shade of pink is in there, consider it mine!
FYI: [Color1]+[Color2] combo is the color of the flysheet where [Color1] is the dominant color and [Color2] is just the accent color.
Off I went to Sir Terry's, exactly six days before our climb. When I finally got there, I was told that the Black+Pink combo was reserved to another buyer. Awww. Actually, the buyer reserved two color options (Baby Blue being the other) but will only purchase one, depending on which color suits her taste. Sir Terry and I were not sure what her choice would be but I was sure that I will go home empty-handed that day. Being customer-friendly that he was, Sir Terry assured me that a Black+Pink tent will be made available for me within the week so I opted to pay him in advance and anxiously waited for the days to further inch some more.
Two days later, I received a text message saying that my tent was available and ready for pickup! The buyer eventually picked the Baby Blue colorway and, although another travel was made, I was still thankful that the Black+Pink was really meant for me.
Sir Terry gave me all the basic knowledge needed to properly pitch and strike this tent. He's very accommodating and energetic despite the fact that I came late that night just to get my items. Aside from the tent, I went home that night with an Apexus Tadpole-tailored footprint and raincover, filled with excited for my upcoming activity. Four days to go!
Materials and Initial Pitching
Unlike when you obtain the Apexus Tadpole in sports outlets, direct purchase from Sir Terry will not come with the marketing box; instead, a custom-made stuff sack packs this tent as you carry it home.
To gain familiarity with the pitching and striking and storing of my new tent, I gave it a try right in the smack of our little sala.
The stuff sack measures 23.5", although the tent (minus the poles) can be reduced to a much minimum length (as will be shown later)
Note that one of the folded poles is a bit smaller compared to the two; this serves as the 'doorway' pole
The two crossing tent poles extend to 122", while the 'doorway' pole is 2.5" shorter
Being accustomed to Coleman Sundome tent, the poles were surprisingly lighter, weighing nearly the same as my Coleman flysheet (well, in my own opinion, at least). Sir Terry informed me that these suckers were made out of aircraft-grade aluminum. They boast of locking tips, sturdy shock cords inside and gold-plated finish outside.
Pegs were made of solid aluminum, thicker than my Coleman's. The ends were blunt to ensure that they will only be used for keeping the flysheet attached to the ground and not for whatever purposes.
Tent body, left; and the flysheet, right
Tent body was ultra-light, and lined with fine mesh screen in the middle to aid in air circulation thus avoiding moisture build-up inside. Entry door is 2-layered U-shape that could either be set to mesh or covered via 'roll-up and tie' procedure. Yes, you have to tie it unlike in my Coleman tent, 'just roll-up and hook' procedure. Apexus could definitely improve on this one.
Footprint made exclusively for the Apexus Tadpole
Marriage of the tent body and footprint
Footprint almost compliments the tent body. Almost... (check Initial Impressions)
The floor is thin, making the footprint a 'must have' especially on rocky terrains. Living room area will definitely vary from one person to another, though it suits my preference just enough. Although the headroom is a little bit low, then again its main purpose is to duck against strong winds.
Flysheet was made of material with scent reminiscent of a freshly-opened raincoat. That alone served as my assurance that it was indeed made of water-resistant fabric. Due to the limited space of our sala, I cannot properly place a conclusion about the vestibule area as per this section. You may refer to the actual field test in the latter part of the review for further information.
Once properly pitched, the free standing tent looks welcoming
U-shaped entrance, private mode
U-shaped entrance, take a peek
Roll-up and tie 'curtain'
Storage and Initial Impressions
From the initial packaging size of 23.5", I was able to reduce the tent packing size to 10". The tent fitted perfectly in my backpack, along with the poles inside. The estimated weight was less than 2kilograms for the tent body and the poles.
Backpack-friendly compression
It was hard to gauge the Apexus Tadpole at this stage given that I've pitched it just within our cramped sala set. However, the ease of pitching and striking were noted, impressively done within 3-5minutes. Overall build is not that solid, but not that tacky as well. It was made with ultra-light backpacking in mind, and was successfully accomplished without compromising the quality of the materials. Given its aerodynamic contour, this tent is expected to withstand raging winds at any level.
Thing of concern is the flooring, as mentioned early it might be too thin to be comfortable on rocky terrains such as Tapulao. Addressing this concern is the footprint, though the one that I got have mismatched peg holes against the tent body. Another suggestion is to have your earthpad ready for a goodnight's sleep.
This gap is somewhat acceptable...
...but this one? Hmm, could this just be an isolated case?
Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the Apexus Tadpole, especially the fact that it was made locally. The support offered by Sir Terry is surely more than enough to sway you into buying Apexus products. Anyway, enough of the marketing; can't wait to proceed with the field test...
Unfortunately, we were not able to climb Mt. Apo – despite being already at jump off – because we were not given the permit. The day of our arrival was the very day the Philippines' highest was declared closed due to anticipated grass fires. Luckily, upon our return to Manila, it was declared open once again.
We will be scheduling another Mt. Apo climb this November, and no matter what happens we will push it through. Part 2 of the review will take place by then, as I will be refraining from climbing temporarily because my wife is on her 8th month of pregnancy with our first child. I will spend a couple of months with them before resuming my outdoor endeavors.
Apologies to Sir Terry for the veeeeery late write up. I just had our PC assembled after my battle-scarred laptop broke down.
Thank you for the time reading this semi-finished review.
