intrepid.ph Mt Kinabalu and Other Malaysian mountain treking
A new Philippine outdoor company, INTREPID.PH, has announced that they are now offering packages for Mt. Kinabalu, including a Via Ferrata package. I met with the Intrepid guys recently and they cited local expertise (they are also based in Kota Kinabalu), extensive contacts, and convenient, hassle-free Kinabalu trips (they will take care of booking in Mt. Kinabalu Park) with the comfort of having Filipino trip coordinators.
Moreover, INTREPID is looking beyond Kinabalu and their are presently identifying new and exciting foreign destinations for Filipino outdoor enthusiasts. They will be the first Filipino company to offer a hiking package up Mt. Trusmadi, the second-highest mountain in Malaysia, dubbed as the "Mt. Halcon of Borneo" (see details below).

Climb Mt. Kinabalu and conquer SE Asia’s highest peak at 13,500 feet. Start at Timpohon Gate and wander through thick rainforest canopy and mountain streams. Veer off to the Mesilau Trail and witness the transformation to an alpine terrain replete with mossy wind blown trees and thick undergrowth. Reach Laban Rata base camp at 10,000 feet and spend the night acclimating to the high altitude and thin air. Assault the summit at sunrise and see the stunning views from Low’s Peak, South Peak, Donkey’s Ears and St. John’s Peak. End your climb with a descent to the Panar Laban Rock Face by Asia’s highest Via Ferrata (iron ladder). Climb Mt. Trusmadi, Malaysia’s second highest mountain at 8,600 feet. Trusmadi is entirely covered in jungle all the way to the summit and is a challenging climb due to the mossy terrain. You will encounter some of the rarest birds and plants in Borneo, some of which grow nowhere else in the world. Approach the peak along thin mountain trails traversing steep gorges on either side. Come across the captivating forest complete with fairy wood, stunted trees with gnarled roots and thick moss covered twisted trunks with huge carnivorous plants dangling above your head; a world of drifting mists and cold gusts of wind, sudden unexpected views over endless expanses of rainforest, and brilliant little orchids wherever you look. This enchanted forest is a breathtaking scene straight out of the Lord of the Rings.
